Perimeter of Square

Concept Explanation

Perimeter of Square

A square is a quadrilateral in which it has 4 equal sides and all the interior angles of a square are right angles. It is a closed two-dimensional plane figure.

Perimeter of square = sum of length of 4 sides = side + side + side + side = 4 × side

If a square has a length of the side 'a' units, then the perimeter of the square = 4a units

Illustration: Find the perimeter of a square of side 5m.

Solution: Given: Side of square = 5m

                Hence,  Perimeter = 4 X 5 = 20m

Illustration:  The perimeter of a square is 52 m. Find the side of the square.

Solution: Perimeter of square = 52 m. But perimeter of square = 4 × side

Therefore, 4 × side = 52 m

Therefore,

small side=frac{52}{4}

small side=13;cm

Illustration: Find the perimeter of a square of side small frac{7}{8};dm

.Solution: Given: Side of square = small frac{7}{8};dm

                Hence,  Perimeter = small 4timesfrac{7}{8}

                                               small =frac{7}{2};dm

Illustration: Find the cost of fencing a square park of side 250 m at the rate of Rs. 20 per meter.

Solution: Given: Side of the square = 250 m

To fence a square park, we need to find the perimeter of the square park.

Hence perimeter of the square park = small 4times side

                                                         = small 4times 250

                                                          = 1000 m

As the cost of fencing 1 meter of square park = Rs. 20

Hence, the cost of fencing 1000 meters of square park = Rs. 20 small times 1000

                                                                                = small Rs.20,000
